At Neue Zürcher Zeitung, the visuals team creates visual, data-driven news stories. Their mission is to advance diverse narrative formats across the newsroom. In their presentation at the Data Visualization Meetup, they will introduce their team and give a short overview of the type of projects they work on. Then, we will delve into two projects that showcase their process and methods. Finally, they will be available to answering any questions from the audience and discussing new forms in visual journalism.

The projects are:
Interactive map: How the Ukraine war is developing, day by day
Unlike past conflicts, the world public can follow the Russian invasion of Ukraine almost in real time. Our interactive map – showing daily events, territorial gains and losses, satellite images, videos from social networks and strategic military positions – gives our readership an up-to-date picture of the situation and helps them unterstand daily developments in the larger context of the war. A team of visual journalists, developers and data journalists updates the map daily, checks events for their veracity and writes summaries. The result is a contemporary document that depicts the course of the war from the time the first soldiers entered the country to today. https://www.nzz.ch/english/ukraine-war-interactive-map-of-the-current-front-line-ld.1688087

Interactive map & video cycling tour through Zurich – the most dangerous city for cycling in Switzerland
Every day an average of two cyclists have an accident in Zurich. This makes the city the most dangerous city for cycling in Switzerland. We analyzed the data on the city’s most critical accident locations and developed two stories from them: One takes readers on a video tour through the city from the perspective of a cyclist to the locations that exemplify the greatest risks, but also where there is room for improvement. In the second story, readers can plot their own individual route through the city on a map and find out where accidents occur along their route and how dangerous their route is compared to others in Zurich. By illuminating risky spots and enabling personalized route analysis, our aim is to catalyze positive change for a safer cycling experience citywide. https://www.nzz.ch/zuerich/velorouten-in-zuerich-das-sind-die-gefaehrlichsten-wege-der-stadt-ld.1754884
