Subject of Discussion: There are no Lamanites, anywhere.
The fantastical claims of Joseph Smith could be just what they appear to be—false. Golden plates, angelic visitations, ancient civilizations in upstate New York: it’s all so extravagant that it dares you to question it.
In 1826, twenty-year-old Joseph was brought before Judge Albert Neely in Bainbridge, New York, charged as an imposter. At the time, he was employed as a treasure-seeking “seer,” claiming he could locate buried gold by peering into a magic stone. He never found any. But he kept the stone—placing it in a hat, pressing his face into the brim—and from that darkness, dictated the entire Book of Mormon to his scribes.
