Joseph Smith was uneducated and untrained in ethics or theology. His ignorance is apparent, and tragically, the Church he founded has not evolved past his limitations. His legacy of absolutism, secrecy, and obedience is codified into the LDS Temple ceremony.
In our law, which is just, self-ownership (personal sovereignty) must exist if one is to be free, hence subject to judgement under the law. Contracts, similar to Covenants, are nullified in law when the person entering the contract is: 1.) Uninformed. 2.) Pressured. 3.) Deceived. Temple Covenants are invalidated for any one or all of those same reasons.
Rather than persuasion, when Church leaders threaten the Eternal Wellbeing of believing Church members using Temple Covenants or Biblical Old Testament law of Obedience to scare or coerce Church members into Tithe paying Obedience, they are revealing their own personal immoral abuse of power they have wrongly adopted on becoming High Priest or Apostles. They mistakenly perpetuate an Authoritarian organizational type that Joseph Smith created in the Temple and that offends the nature of God.
