Details

Let's go on an adventure.

Join me Friday June 25th on a difficult trip (with an easier option for some) through the area starting at the Flatrock Run trail and climbing over 2300' ft to explore the Roaring Plains. The 1st night we will camp near the end of the Roaring Plains trail~9 miles. Camp will be at over 4000' so the weather may be a little cooler than you'd expect for that time of year, or it might not be:)

Depending on the pace we are able to make, we may explore the canyon ridge. It is quite beautiful from the pictures I've seen. I want to stress that there will be over 2300' ft of elevation gain the first day. 1200' ft of that is in less than 1 mile.

If you are not able to get off work to meet us Friday, or if you feel that day is too ambitious for you, it's okay. You can still come have fun too. This trip will be laid out in such a way that a second group would be able to meet up with us on Saturday near the Red Creek trail head in the Dolly Sods Wilderness. TIME TO BE DETERMINED CLOSER TO TRIP

The second day (for those starting Friday) will begin by going down the Boars Nest trail to a short road walk to the Red Creek Trail in Dolly Sods Wilderness (this is where the people coming down Saturday will meet up). This will be taken to the Rocky Point Trail where we will search for the Lions Head (https://1.bp.blogspot.com/_wydw9_BC5Vk/SmzoMj3s0CI/AAAAAAAAAw8/F_BcG3SKbhA/s400/DSC02046.jpg) outcrop before finding our camp for the second night near the intersection of Big Stonecoal and Dunkenbarger Trails~9 miles (roughly 6 miles for people coming down Saturday).

The final day will follow Dunkenbarger to the Little Stonecoal trail before exiting the Wilderness by way of the Red Creek Trail. If we leave at least 1 car at the Red Creek Trailhead we can end the day ~ 3 miles and make an early, relaxing exit to get home and relax from what I hear should be two days of difficult navigation and terrain.

Exact times will be worked out after initial interest is shown. As a member of a group trip you will be expected to BE ON TIME and BE PREPARED to allow for the enjoyment of the group. You can find some decent maps of the area online at the WV Highlands Conservancy (https://www.wvhighlands.org/Pages/Maps.html) website.
