Join us for our monthly meetup! This month's talk is: An Introduction To Localized EMP Fault Injection. Electromagentic Pulses (EMPs) are a mainstay of science fiction, showing up whenever electronics need to be disabled for plot purposes. In hardware hacking, these are referred to as electromagnetic fault injection (EMFI) and they are used to induce unexpected behavior and potentially bypass security controls. Unlike the movies, EMFI is currently only suitable against unprotected targets millimeters from the electromagnetic generator so the talk focuses on microcontrollers. This presentation will provide an introduction to the theory of EMFI, how it works, why you don’t need to be worried about EMPs, and a relatively low cost way to experiment with it against microcontroller targets.
