Fifty years ago, in 1976, we were celebrating our nation’s bicentennial and the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Disco was extremely popular, but there were many other great music genres including classic rock, funk, soul, soft rock, and county.

Let’s explore the 1976 year in music, including how the unique sounds of that era related to other pop culture forms such as film, television, fashion, media, the visual arts, sports, literature, politics, etc.
This will be a two-part series on Friday, June 26 and Saturday, June 27

During the program you’ll have the opportunity to discuss the songs and artists with your fellow music lovers via Zoom.

The series may potentially be repeated later this year in November or December.

July History Book Club: The Idea of America by Gordon S Wood

July brings us to the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, so we will once again focus on the founding of the USA. The book is The Idea of America: Reflections on the Birth of America by historian Gordon S. Wood, who has been called by some the preeminent history of theAmerican Revolution. Here is what the publisher has to say about the book:

"More than almost any other nation in the world, the United States began as an idea. For this reason, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Gordon S. Wood believes that the American Revolution is the most important event in our history, bar none. Since American identity is so fluid and not based on any universally shared heritage, we have had to continually return to our nation's founding to understand who we are. In 'The Idea of America', Wood reflects on the birth of American nationhood and explains why the revolution remains so essential.

As Wood reveals, while the founders hoped to create a virtuous republic of yeoman farmers and uninterested leaders, they instead gave birth to a sprawling, licentious, and materialistic popular democracy.

Wood also traces the origins of American exceptionalism to this period, revealing how the revolutionary generation, despite living in a distant, sparsely populated country, believed itself to be the most enlightened people on earth. The revolution gave Americans their messianic sense of purpose-and perhaps our continued propensity to promote democracy around the world. Yet what may seem like audacity in retrospect reflected the fact that in the eighteenth century republicanism was a truly radical ideology-as radical as Marxism would be in the nineteenth-and one that indeed inspired revolutionaries the world over.

Today there exists what Wood calls a terrifying gap between us and the founders, such that it requires almost an act of imagination to fully recapture their era. Because we now take our democracy for granted, it is nearly impossible for us to appreciate how deeply the founders feared their grand experiment in liberty could evolve into monarchy or dissolve into licentiousness. The Idea of America helps us to recapture the fears and hopes of the revolutionary generation and its attempts to translate those ideals into a working democracy."

Please remember that this is, first and foremost, a book club. Like any local book club, the point is discussion about a shared experience - reading a book! It is not a lecture series. So as usual, get a copy of the book, read it and then join us for another interesting discussion. We continue to meet virtually because so many of our members now join us from locations outside the D.C area.

For French Independence Day (Bastille Day - July 14), we invite you to join us for an online/virtual tour of the Louvre in Paris, France, considered by many to be the world's greatest art museum.

This will be a two-part art history program
Part 1 - Saturday, July 11 - French Highlights, with emphasis on works from 1643 (Louis XIV) through 1815 (Napoleon Bonaparte).

Part 2 - Saturday, July 18 - International (Non-French) Highlights, including Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

During and after both programs you’ll have the opportunity to discuss the topics with your fellow art lovers via Zoom.

The Louvre, or the Louvre Museum (French: Musée du Louvre, is the world's second-largest art museum and a historic monument in Paris, France, and is best known for being the home of the Mona Lisa. A central landmark of the city, it is located on the Right Bank of the Seine in the city's 1st arrondissement (district or ward). Approximately 38,000 objects from prehistory to the 21st century are exhibited over an area of 72,735 square meters (782,910 square feet). The Louvre topped the list of most-visited art museums in the world in 2020.
The Musée du Louvre contains more than 380,000 objects and displays 35,000 works of art in eight curatorial departments with more than 60,600 square metres (652,000 sq ft) dedicated to the permanent collection. The Louvre exhibits sculptures, objets d'art, paintings, drawings, and archaeological finds. It is the world's most visited museum, averaging 15,000 visitors per day, 65 percent of whom are foreign tourists.
