April Book: "The Highly Sensitive Person" by Elaine Aron
Our April book is "The Highly Sensitive Person" by Elaine Aron.
Join us for exploring the fascinating trait of high sensitivity, in Dr. Aron's pioneering book! Researchers believe approximately 20% of the human population has this trait that affects every dimension of a person's life, including mental and physical health, relationships, and more.
Curious if you are highly sensitive? Dr. Aron's Self-Test Questionnaire is available on her website.
[Are You Highly Sensitive?](https://hsperson.com/test/highly-sensitive-test/)
Also, there's recently been a documentary on the topic of high sensitivity, where Dr. Aron discusses the trait. Here is a trailer. The full movie is available for free on YouTube.
[Sensitive: The Untold Story](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXlOyGuvfVE)
We'll start the meeting with each person sharing their name and one thing they found interesting or helpful about the book, then have open discussion.
Here is the Amazon description of the book:
"ARE YOU A HIGHLY SENSITIVE PERSON?
Do you have a keen imagination and vivid dreams? Is time alone each day as essential to you as food and water? Are you noted for your empathy? Your conscientiousness? Do noise and confusion quickly overwhelm you? If your answers are yes, you may be a highly sensitive person (HSP) and Dr. Elaine Aron’s The Highly Sensitive Person is the life-changing guide you’ll want in your toolbox.
Over twenty percent of people have this amazing, innate trait. Maybe you are one of them. A similar percentage is found in over 100 species, because high sensitivity is a survival strategy. It is also a way of life for HSPs.
In this 25th anniversary edition of the groundbreaking classic, Dr. Elaine Aron, a research and clinical psychologist as well as an HSP herself, helps you grasp the reality of your wonderful trait, understand your past in the light of it, and make the most of it in your future. Drawing on her many years of study and face-to-face time spent with thousands of HSPs, she explains the changes you will need to make in order to lead a fuller, richer life.
Along with a new Author’s Note, the latest scientific research, and a fresh discussion of anti-depressants, this edition of The Highly Sensitive Person is more essential than ever for creating the sense of self-worth and empowerment every HSP deserves and our planet needs."

Emotional Honesty & Real Optimism
Emotional Honesty & Real Optimism
This session explores the limits of constant positivity and offers an alternative: emotional honesty paired with real optimism. Inspired by Barbara Ehrenreich’s Bright-sided and an NPR Life Kit conversation on “real optimism,” we’ll examine how our culture often encourages us to look on the bright side too quickly—and what we might lose when we do. While positivity can be helpful, it can also unintentionally minimize real experiences or shut down deeper understanding.
Together, we’ll explore the difference between forced positivity and a more grounded form of optimism—one rooted in resilience, curiosity, and a clear-eyed view of reality. The NPR discussion highlights that real optimism is not about ignoring hardship, but about recognizing it fully and still believing in our ability to move forward. This session creates space to reflect on our own emotional patterns and how we respond to difficulty.
Through individual reflection, partner discussion, and group dialogue, participants will practice naming emotions, understanding their origins, and considering what it means to respond thoughtfully rather than reactively. The goal is not to reject positivity, but to use it more intentionally—after we’ve acknowledged what’s real.
As always, come as you are.
Bring your curiosity.
Leave with insight, connection, and steadiness.

Improv Night at the Happy Treehouse - DC’s NEW Improv Troupe - The Ripple Effect
Improv Night at the Happy Treehouse with The Ripple Effect Improv Troupe
Let’s be honest. Life gives us plenty of serious moments.
This night is not one of them.
Join us from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM for a night of spontaneous comedy with The Ripple Effect, an improv troupe that travels around the DMV bringing laughter to places where people could use a little more joy.
Hospitals, community events, gatherings like this one. Anywhere people need a good laugh, we show up and start a ripple.
And once the laughter starts, it spreads fast.
If you’ve never seen improv live before, you’re in for a treat. Nothing is scripted. No one knows what’s going to happen next, including us. The entire show is built in real time based on your suggestions from the audience.
You might shout out a job.
A location.
A random object.
And suddenly you’re watching a scene about a dog therapist with boundary issues or a married couple arguing about who forgot to charge the emotional support Roomba.
That’s the magic of improv. Quick thinking, unexpected twists, and the kind of laughter that sneaks up on you.
Why people love watching improv:
*You laugh harder because you never see the joke coming.
*You get to participate by shouting out ideas that shape the scene.
*You watch performers build something hilarious out of thin air.
And the whole audience ends up laughing together because everyone is experiencing something that has never happened before and will never happen again.
You’ll definitely walk out feeling lighter than when you walked in.
And along the way you might meet a few new people who also enjoy laughing.
Because honestly… who doesn’t want funny friends?
The vibe for the evening
This is a relaxed BYOB potluck gathering under the pavilion.
*Bring your favorite drink.
*Bring a dish to share.
*Bring a lawn chair if you have one.
If you forget a chair, no problem. You can grab one of the chairs here, relax on the in-ground trampoline, or find a cozy spot around the pavilion.
We’ll have the fire going, s’mores ready, and plenty of room to settle in and enjoy the show.
Think backyard comedy club meets campfire hangout.
Great people.
Great laughs.
A little silliness.
And a ripple of joy spreading through the crowd.
Come join us,
Janine, your happy host

NEW CLASS!! Sculpting Photos at the National Gallery of Art
THIS CLASS IS OFFERED THROUGH CAPITAL PHOTOGRAPHY CENTER
**PLEASE REGISTER WITH CAPITAL PHOTOGRAPHY CENTER, NOT MEETUP!**
https://capitalphotographycenter.com/classes/class/2026-04-19-sculpting-photos
**Sculpting Photos**
The sculptures in the west wing National Gallery of Art offers photographers a unique creative challenge: The art is already shaped by light, form, and intention. In this class we will explore how photography can re-imagine three-dimensional works through thoughtful observation and creative choices.
By paying close attention to light, shadow, texture, and perspective, photographers can reveal new interpretations of sculptures, highlighting details, moods, and relationships that may not be immediately visible to the naked eye.
Through guided looking and hands-on practice in the galleries, students will learn how camera position, framing, depth of field, and timing transform solid, static objects into dynamic photographic images. Whether isolating a gesture, emphasizing scale, or experimenting with abstraction, this class encourages photographers to move beyond documentation and toward personal expression, using sculpture as a powerful starting point for visual storytelling.
Whether you’re new to photography or looking to deepen your practice, this class invites you to see the sculpture and your creative process in fresh ways.
In this class you will learn to:
1. Develop observational skills by learning to analyze sculpture in terms of form, space, light, and texture, and translating those observations into intentional photographic choices.
2. Explore creative photographic techniques such as framing, perspective, and selective focus to reinterpret sculptures and create expressive, original images in an indoor museum setting.
3. Build visual storytelling skills by using photography to convey mood, movement, or meaning, helping students articulate a personal response to sculptural works.
All cameras are welcome, from your smartphone to DSLR. However, we recommend the camera you use has multiple lenses or a zoom, and ability to adjust exposure.
Lenses in the range of 28mm to 200mm would be appropriate. No flash or tripod since we'll be in a museum.
Questions can be directed to Marie Joabar at info@capitalphotographycenter.com.
Class limit: 8-9

Meaningful Conversation and Coffee - Northside Social Falls Church
**Join us in Falls Church for conversations that go beyond small talk.**
Higher Grounds – Falls Church is where this growing network of gatherings began: a space for thoughtful, authentic dialogue about what matters most. Whether we’re exploring the nature of happiness, the challenges and possibilities of midlife, spirituality, culture, capitalism, parenting, or the role of art and travel in a meaningful life, every conversation is shaped by the people in the room.
There’s no set leader or rigid agenda—just a shared commitment to listen as much as we speak. We start with brief introductions focused on what makes you *you* (not your LinkedIn bio), then dive straight into whatever is on people’s minds. The direction of each meetup emerges organically, making every event unique.
MANDATORY: PLEASE REVIEW OUR COMMUNITY GUIDELINES IN THE GROUP DESCRIPTION. Everyone is expected to engage in respectful conversations and listen deeply as well as share. We have a zero tolerance policy of sexual harassment and hate speech.
Come ready to share, reflect, and connect with others in Falls Church who are also seeking deeper conversations.

Want to Truly Heal from Emotional Trauma?
Why are we unhappy? Where does emotional pain come from? Studies show that people who suffer from long-term emotional pain have painful experiences in their lives that were never fully resolved in their mind. In other words, there were issues in the past that were not completely dealt with. This can include abuse in childhood, breakups, divorce, death of a loved one, to name a few.
How do you know whether you have gotten over something painful? Here is an easy test: Do you still have attention on what had happened to you? For instance, do you still find yourself thinking about something painful that you went through? If you are, then you are not over it. In fact, in severe cases, people find themselves playing a "tape" in their mind over and over again.
So how do you heal from your past? How do you stop the "tape" playing in your mind? In this meeting, you will learn a technique to help you with that.
Come join us! Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to this local event. We look forward to seeing you there.

Free In-Person Meeting: Healing from Trauma and Past Betrayals
This is a free, in person meeting.
Burdened by a stressful relationship? Unhealthy relationships can trigger feelings of anger, despair or self-doubt. They can create dwindling spirals of fights and seeking to make-up, or trying to “pin the blame” on someone or something. If you don’t find the RIGHT reasons, or select the correct sources of the problem, the problem can just get worse and worse.
Whether in love or personal ties, with friends or at work, our life really IS affected by the quality of our relationships. Good ones can promote pleasure and survival while less optimum ones can lead to annoyance, anger, self-doubt, stress, or even affect our health and ability to survive well.
Whether you are suffering from a divorce, or a painful break-up, don’t know who to trust (or who to CHOOSE) as a partner, friend, boss or employee - the anxiety of relationship troubles can really make a mess of things. Maybe you’ve suffered a betrayal, or are dealing with hostility or criticalness or invalidation. Dwindling relationships can involve destructive behavior, where we hurt those we love, or start succumbing to self-destructive thoughts, attitudes or behaviors that spiral out of control and affect much more than our immediate relationship.
Past losses in love or life can affect how we act or react to new people and situations and hold us back from even starting to create new, possibly great relationships! How can one get back onto a saner course of action?
Come to our Meetup, where we can introduce you to some of the knowledge, tools and techniques of the breakthroughs in the field of the mind that we can apply to this ever important area of life: human relationships!
Break free from self imposed limitations
Here we will discuss:
• How to “erase” the trauma of past hurts and betrayals so that one isn’t always repeating past mistakes.
• Why and how do the negative emotions of others affect you?
• Why is my partner withdrawing and what can I do about it?
• Why do we sometimes feel compelled to hurt the ones we love?
• Fights & arguments - what's really behind them?
• What underlies “corrosive criticism” or the need to invalidate self or others?
• How one can stably change one’s outlook on life so they can affect positive change?
• Where do compulsive destructive behaviors come from and what can be done about them?
• How to form closer bonds & keep growing the relationships with the people you care about?
• How to enhance one’s own ability to survive and create positive healthy relationships whether in love, family & friendships or in work, business or one’s career?
Relationships can be hard and life itself IS challenging. Why not arm yourself with the knowledge and breakthroughs that have been made about the mind, mental reactions & interpersonal relationships, so that one has better awareness and control over themselves and life in general.
Learn where painful experiences are “stored” and how they can unknowingly affect us. You will also find out how one can “erase” those past painful experiences so that one is free to move forward without being tripped up by the past. Learn too, about what can lead some people to become “toxic” personalities and how to identify those traits in others so you won’t be tripped up trusting the wrong person.
Our free Meet-ups occur in a safe environment where one can learn, without fear of judgment or criticism, and without the recommendation of harmful mental techniques or therapies, just how YOU can get yourself onto a happier & more successful path: in love & in life.
We look forward to having you join us!

Free In-person Meeting: Unwanted Emotions & Loneliness, How to Get Over Them
This is an in-person meeting.
Did you know that unwanted emotions like loneliness, sadness, hopelessness, anger, fear, anxiety, or feelings of irritation don’t just fall on you for no reason. They are not random occurrences that simply happen to people's minds. They are definitely not chemical imbalance in your brain due to some nebulous chemical reactions by chance.
Your negative emotions are the symptoms of the painful experiences that you have which are not healed, and which are still affecting you.
The effects of these painful experiences are exacerbated by the pressures or difficulties of the other problems in your life.
For instance, let's say you are already carrying a huge load on your back, then you cannot take on much more, but, let's say something else happens to you, such as the difficulties from the Pandemic, then the resultant combined weight on you can take you over the edge, kind of like the straw that break the camel's back. When this happens, people's attention usually goes to the straw that was added, but actually the majority of the weight had come from the huge load that were already there, holding a person down and causing a person issues.
So how do you remove the huge load that was already there? How do you lighten them up? Is it possible to get rid of them?
That is what this meeting will be all about.
Come to our Meetup, where we can introduce you to some of the knowledge, tools and techniques of the breakthroughs in the field of the mind that we can apply to this ever important area of life.
