Festival Doc With Big Music Name and Reception - Must Buy Ticket
JxJ, the DC Jewish Film and Music Festival does an excellent job of scheduling interesting films, conversations and receptions. This documentary film short looks particularly absorbing and very cool that Regina Spektor will be there to discuss. (It now says her husband will appear instead. But still good reception.)
**The cost is $18 and includes a reception after. Tickets can be bought [here](https://www.edcjcc.org/jxj/show/my-friend-sam/) and in person that night if it does not sell out.**
Singer-songwriter Regina Spektor’s life changed forever when, as a child, she was taken under the wing of musicians Sonia Vargas and Samuel Marder.
Blending frank interviews with powerful animation, Samuel walks through his childhood in Romania, the trials he faced as a Holocaust survivor, and the transformative impact that music had even during the darkest times. His endurance as a violinist and the lessons he shared with Regina charted the course of her own musical development for the decades that followed.
**Q&A with producer Regina Spektor following the screening.** **A catered reception will follow the conclusion of the Q&A**.

Profs & Pints DC: When Washington Burned
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“When Washington Burned,”** a detailed look at the devastating 1814 British attack on the Capitol, with Denver Brunsman, associate professor of history at George Washington University, lecturer at Mount Vernon, and scholar of the American revolution and early American republic.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-when-washington-burned](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-when-washington-burned) .]
You’ve probably toured several of Washington’s landmarks, but have you considered those that went up in smoke more than 200 years ago?
Learn about one of our nation’s greatest scares from historian Denver Brunsman, a favorite of Profs and Pints audiences and expert on the War of 1812, which led to the infamous 1814 attack. He’ll tell the riveting tale of how British troops torched the Capitol and White House and burned down nearly all of Washington’s public buildings.
He’ll frame his talk of such mayhem by discussing the origins and significance of the conflict that caused it, the War of 1812. In addition to helping to cement America’s independence, the War of 1812 helped give rise to a sense of nationalism among the people of Canada. It rallied boosters of the city of Washington—among them, First Lady Dolley Madison—to advocate for keeping it as the nation’s capital. With the war’s end, America was free to embark on two centuries of growth.
You’ll leave with a much greater appreciation of how our nation has withstood tests in the past and how much of Washington D.C. has been built upon the ruins of previous losses. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.)

THE GREAT GATSBY is a “Broadway extravaganza that explodes with life and energy” (*Entertainment Weekly*). Based on the classic American novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the Tony Award®-winning new musical is an unforgettable journey of love, wealth and tragedy that brings the Roaring Twenties to life on stage.
Directed by Marc Bruni (*Beautiful: The Carole King Musical*), this story of extravagance and longing features choreography by Dominique Kelley (*So You Think You Can Dance*), a book by Kait Kerrigan (*The Mad Ones*) and a jazz- and pop-influenced original score by Jason Howland (*Little Women*) and Nathan Tysen (*Paradise Square*).
48 Hour Film - Premiere
Join the DC Creative Collective for a premier of our short film in the 48 Hour Film Challenge titled, ‘Seasoning King.’
I & You: The Musical - Curtain at 7:30PM
Join the group for *I & You: The Musical* at Olney Theatre Center on Saturday, May 16 at 7:30PM! Apologies for making it the same weekend as *The Great Gatsby*, but my availability is limited during this run.
Please comment below on your ticket location preference so we can try to create 1-2 ticket blocks.
In 2015, Olney Theatre produced the Rolling World Premiere of *[I And You](https://youtu.be/BFG0NoiJh4M?si=1RLJFHShibUtkBUB)* by Lauren Gunderson, which went on to become one of the most-produced plays in America. Now, we’re bringing you the World Premiere of the musical adaptation of her hit play. Anthony turns up in Caroline’s bedroom one night bearing waffle fries, a beat-up book, and a homework assignment they’re supposed to do together: explore Walt Whitman’s poem “Song of Myself.” Chronically sick, Caroline hasn’t been to school in a while… and can’t even remember meeting some kid named Anthony, which dials up both her suspicions and her “snark-o-meter.” But as the two get to know each other, they finally learn of the deeper mystery that brought them together. Whitman’s powerful poetry inspires the music and lyrics by American Idol veteran Ari Afsar, which expands the magic of Gunderson’s remarkable story.
Red Carpet Movie Premiere This Saturday
This Saturday, we celebrate more than a film premiere. We celebrate the power of storytelling, the strength of family bonds, and the love that connects us all. GYPASO. May 16th. 1:00 PM. Greenbelt Cinema. See you on the red carpet.
AGUARDIENTE - World Premiere Musical!
Join us for the world premiere of the musical ***Aguardiente: Where Magic Transcends Borders,*** commissioned by GALA and conceived by Helen Hayes multi-award winner Luis Salgado from Puerto Rico and Colombian artist Daniel Alejandro Gutiérrez.
Blending Afro-Caribbean rhythms such as bomba, currulao, and cumbia, and Gabriel García Márquez’s magical realism, Aguardiente is a bold new musical about the messy, urgent act of making art in a world on fire. As a group of artists race to finish a new show, their rehearsal room becomes a battleground of ideas, ambition, and lived experience—especially for a composer whose undocumented status makes the dream of success anything but simple.
As the team wrestles with what story they should tell, the line between reality and imagination begins to blur, until—like two currents meeting in the same river—the artists’ own struggles spill into the story they are creating: a vibrant tale set in a river town on the brink of environmental collapse, where two young lovers must decide whether to stay and fight for their homeland or leave in pursuit of a dream, making Aguardiente a theatrical journey about migration, memory, and the complicated act of transforming real lives into art.
**PERFORMANCES:** ***Aguardiente*** is a bilingual production with surtitles in English and Spanish, and runs April 30 through May 24, 2026. Performances are Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 2 pm. The show is approximately 160 minutes long and includes one intermission.
Community Night is Thursday, April 30.
Noche de GALA, which includes a post-performance reception with the cast and creative team, is Saturday, May 2, under the honorary patronage of His Excellency Daniel García-Peña Jaramillo, Ambassador of Colombia to the U.S.
**TICKETS:** Regular tickets for ***Aguardiente*** are $60 Premium, $55 Orchestra Standard, $45 Orchestra Value, and $35 Balcony Value; $35 Seniors (65+), Military, Teachers, and Groups (10+); $25 25 and Under; Community Night tickets are $25 each and Noche de GALA: Chosen ticket price + $5 (per person). **[GET TICKETS HERE](https://ci.ovationtix.com/35923/production/1245626)**

Social Presencing Theater (SPT) Practice
Social Presencing Theater (SPT) is an embodied awareness based practice used as an arts-based system change methodology, however, it can be used in many different applications to bring awareness to the present through body intelligence.
This event, led by somatic practitioner, [Lindsay Little](https://somalingua.com/about), will teach SPT practices and invite you to connect with your body, your somatic knowing, intuition, and the present moment. There will be some reflective dialogue, but most of the event will involve moving your body and resting in stillness in a group setting. No prior experience is required. Find out more about SPT here: https://arawanahayashi.com/spt.
You may want to bring a blanket or yoga mat and a journal.
