Gender diverse identity affirms that a person’s biological sex is not necessarily determinative of that person's gender, rather it is one of a myriad of physiological, psychological, sociological and environmental factors that contribute to a person's identity. That identity is experienced and expressed via a broad set of attributes (including gender) which collectively comprise the individual.

Let's delve into gender diversity and identity, using the following questions/observations to prompt discussion:

  • Is biological sex determinative of gender?
  • If not:

- Does any factor determine gender? If so, what are these factors?
- Is gender itself unchangeable within an individual?
- Do ‘men’ and ‘women’ exist?

  • If so:
    - Are there exceptions? If so, do those exceptions break the rule or disprove it?

- Are ’traditional’ gender roles inseparable from this determinative view?

  • Does gender matter to the individual identity?

  • What are some ramifications to the construct of individual identity, of each of the gender determination positions set out above?

  • Does gender matter to society?

  • What are some societal ramifications of each of the gender determination positions set out above?

  • Has modern society progressed to a point where sex and gender are less important attributes than they used to be?

Additional rules for this meetup

Please refresh yourself with the guidelines of this group on the main page.

In acknowledgement of the potentially controversial nature of this topic, there will be stricter than usual rules in place for this meetup. Our aim will be to keep opinions to a minimum and open discussion to a maximum. This is to facilitate an inquisitive rather than adversarial atmosphere and to ensure that the conversation is respectful and, as the name of our meetup group says, deep and meaningful.

If you RSVP to this meetup, you agree to abide by the following:

  • Any voiced contribution is to be concluded with either:
  • A substantive question for someone else in the group to answer, or
  • An express request for a rebutting viewpoint.
  • No talking down to others in the group. Disagreements are not discouraged but must be topical and expressed respectfully.
  • No dismissal/condemnation of any other person’s viewpoint. As Kenny Rogers sang “There’ll be time enough for [asserting to yourself that your opinions are ‘right’] when the [conversation’s] done!”
  • Any reframing of another person’s contribution is to be made in good faith for the purpose of understanding/clarification rather than dismissal.
