Destiny

An integral part of living and growing is learning to reconcile our desire for individual freedom with our obligations to entities outside ourselves - e.g. people, work, systems, environments, information. To live is to interact, even at the most basic level of feeding or breathing.

Social and generational ties may be strengthened by a shared purpose or sense of purpose. Commonly this is expressed in storytelling, which often involves a central hero overcoming adversity by wisely and skillfully utilising personal attributes and experiences, and in so doing fulfill their destiny.

Destiny, therefore, may sometimes be understood as a ‘singular path of highest calling’, which each of us must walk as the one route through life which is uniquely suited to ourselves. If we don't walk it, no one will, and the world will be that little bit worse for it.

Let's discuss the concept of destiny, including an exploration of the following thought prompts:

  • Is there a literal singular path of highest calling for each individual?
  • If so, can we know that each step we take in life is on that path?
  • If so, do universal attributes exist that facilitate the finding of and walking on that path?
  • If not, is destiny more a theoretical construct?
  • What benefits or harms have resulted from the idea of, or pursuit of, destiny?
  • Is destiny synonymous with fate?
  • Does destiny restrict or facilitate freedom? How and why?
  • How does destiny intersect with modern ideals of individualism and the rule of law?
  • What impacts does the idea of destiny have on our everyday lives?
