Deep & Meaningful Conversation: Utopia, Dystopia… or Both?
Can we make sense of today’s rapidly changing world through the ideas of utopia and dystopia?
As Ken Liu, the speculative science fiction author observed, ‘Every dystopia is a utopia for somebody else.’ What appears ideal from one perspective may come at a cost to another. Perhaps the line between the two is not fixed, but constantly shifting depending on where we stand.
This conversation invites you to explore how visions of a ‘better world’—whether in politics, technology, culture, or even personal life—can carry unintended consequences. From historical ideas of ideal societies to modern debates around AI, consumerism, and social change, we’ll consider how progress can both elevate and unsettle.
We’ll also touch on Margaret Atwood’s idea of ‘ustopia’: the notion that every utopia contains the seeds of its own dystopia, and vice versa.
Some prompts to consider:

  • Where do you see utopian ideals shaping the world today?
  • Who benefits—and who may be left out?
  • Can the same system be both utopian and dystopian at once?
  • How do these dynamics show up in everyday life or relationships?
  • Can we divine the impact of AI? A UTOPIAN FUTURE, where creativity, autonomy, dignity and consciousness expand. A DYSTOPIAN FUTURE, where efficiency replaces meaning, for most, and people lose psychological and social grounding, they become mere pawns within the algorithm.

No preparation is required—just bring your curiosity, your perspective, and a willingness to explore complexity with others.

RSVP POLICY:
RSVPs and cancellations will be accepted up until 6 hours before the start of the meetup so that people who feel unwell on the day have time to change their RSVP and allow someone else to attend.
Being registered to attend and not attending OR cancelling your attendance after 12:30pm on Tuesday will be considered a 'No Show'.
Members with two 'No Shows' will be banned from attending further D&M Meetups. This RSVP policy has become necessary due to the high number of last minute withdrawals and non-attendance. This unfairly causes people on the Waiting List to miss out. Thanks for your cooperation.
