The Lovers on the Bridge at the Sie
Details
After the fascinating Testament Of Ann Lee, I heard a Mona Fastvold interview where she called out The Lovers on the Bridge as not just the most expensive French film of its time but also a singular under seen and undervalued work. Ha! Thanks to the Sie we have a rare occasion to see this 4k restoration of the very same!
Leos Carax’s “The Lovers on the Bridge” has the raw, gritty look of a documentary on the homeless, but it is in the grand tradition of heady screen romances. It’s a throwback to the golden era of both Hollywood and of the fatalistic French cinema that teamed such international icons as Jean Gabin and Michelle Morgan. Yet this 1991 film, rescued by Martin Scorsese and Miramax Zoe--a specialty arm of Miramax--is a go-for-broke dazzler that takes constant chances, dares to go over the top, indulges in one anticlimactic scene after another only to make such risks pay off all the more at the finish. Screens Saturday, February 28th at 12pm in a brand new 4K restoration for its 35th Anniversary!
Leos Carax’s delirious saga of l’amour fou burns with an intoxicating stylistic freedom as it traces the highs and lows of the passionate relationship that develops between a homeless artist (Juliette Binoche) who is losing her sight and a troubled, alcoholic street performer (Denis Lavant) living on Paris’s famed Pont-Neuf bridge. Capturing their romantic abandon with a giddy expressionist energy—especially in a wild dance sequence set against an explosion of fireworks— this whirlwind love story is an exhilarating journey through a relationship that confirmed Carax’s status as one of the leading lights of the post–New Wave French cinema.
This 4K restoration was carried out by TransPerfect Media from the original 35mm film negative and multi tracks. Color grading supervised by Caroline Champetier, sound by Thomas Guader. Project supervised by Sophie Boyer, Jean Pierre Boiget and the StudioCanal team. Digitization and restoration done with the support of the CNC and the participation of Theo Films.
