Join me at Bruz Off Fax for food, drink, and discussion as I host a Compare and Contrast event featuring two cult classics of 90s cinema: Tim Burton’s Ed Wood (1994) and Tom DiCillo’s Living in Oblivion (1995). This is a watch at home, discuss in person, event.

Space is limited! To keep the discussion intimate and engaging, this event is limited to 8 people. Please RSVP early to secure your spot at the table. Please update your RSVP should your plans change, this will allow another guest to take your spot should you cancel.

Why this pairing?
I’ve chosen these two films because they represent the two sides of the filmmaking coin. Both explore what happens when an artist's vision meets a messy, uncooperative reality.

Ed Wood captures the unbridled, optimistic spirit of an outsider trying to make it in Hollywood.

Living in Oblivion captures the hilarious, frantic chaos of an independent film set where everything that can go wrong, does.

One is a stylized look at a real-life legend; the other is a satirical look at fictionalized indie-film nightmares. Together, they offer a perfect look at the egos, the accidents, and the passion required to actually finish a movie.

Both films are available to watch as rentals on Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and YouTube. Living is Oblivion is free on Kanopy.

The Plan:
We’ll be meeting in the tapoom for food, drink, and discussion. We aren't screening the movies that evening, so please watch them at home beforehand! We'll spend the approximately hour-and-a-half talking about which director we’d rather work for and why these films still resonate today.

Bruz Off Fax offers, along with a full assortment of Belgium beers (N/A too!), wine and root beer, a number of food items: Pretzels, Pizzas, Tinned Fish, Popcorn and Chips. Monday night is a Pizza and 2 Beers for $20 special.

  • See you on the 23rd, for this cult classic discussion!
