Denver Public Library’s One Book One Denver program invites you to a live, in-person discussion with filmmaker RaMell Ross, director and co-writer of Nickel Boys (2024). Ross will discuss the journey of adapting Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel for the screen, from developing the film’s distinctive first-person perspective to translating Elwood and Turner’s experiences, friendship, and contrasting worldviews into a visual form.
The conversation will explore the artistic choices that shaped the film, the real history behind the fictional Nickel Academy, and the challenges of adapting a celebrated novel while preserving its emotional and historical complexity. Audiences will hear directly from Ross about his creative vision and the ideas of memory, injustice, survival, and friendship that run through both the book and the film.
