Hell and those who have never heard of Jesus

If Christianity is true, do Christians actually believe that some will be eternally lost, maybe even endure horrible torture for ever, just because they have never heard of Jesus? Should Christians believe this if they accept the New Testament teachings? Our topics couldn't get any heavier than this one.
