Philosophy and Coffee
Details
This is a group to discuss philosophy, the academic study of knowledge, existence, beauty, and morality among other things. We have a particular focus on the tradition of Stoicism, but the conversation will go wherever it goes.
Please come with discussion questions ready, anything you've been thinking about or been wondering about. Try to frame your thoughts as a question. We will pick our topic at the beginning of the meeting according to our collective interests.
Please be prepared to make a small purchase at the coffee shop so we justify our use of their space. But if you are totally without means, don't worry about it.
I look forward to meeting you!

APPENDIX
Ground Rules for Discussion
Preamble
These rules are principles that have been guiding these meetings since I took it over last year (2022). I am adding them to the event description just to make explicit what the expectations are. It's low-stakes, so don't worry about it too much.
1. Mutual Respect
Every attendee should behave in manner than is respectful of others. This is a core and fundamental principle.
2. Attentive Listening
Every attendee should listen attentively, and seek to understand fellow attendees.
3. Right to Pass/Right to Participate
Every attendee has the right to pass on any activity. Every attendee has the right to participate in every activity. Every attendee should respect each others right to pass and right to participate.
4. Put Downs
No attendee should put down, diminish, or degrade any other attendee at any meeting or outside of any meeting.
5. Cross-talk
Meetings should consist of a single discussion/conversation. Attendees should not have multiple separate conversations.
6. Monologues
No attendee (or subset of attendees) should speak for a unreasonable length of time that causes others to have a more limited opportunity to contribute (i.e. No monologues).
7. Use of Jargon/Name-dropping
These meetings are attended by people of varying degrees of familiarity with philosophy, and no one should leave feeling alienated by language.
As such, no attendee should use jargon or refer to any person/organization/school of thought/etc. without either a) the attendee knowing all other attendees are familiar or b) the attendee explaining who/what the attendee is talking about and why they are relevant to the point the attendee is trying to make.
8. On-topic Discussion - No Politics, No Religion
The meetings should be largely on-topic to philosophy, though some occasional tangents are expected. However, some topics are always off-limits: politics and religion. Discussion of political philosophy and the philosophy of religion are on-topic.
