What if being human isn’t something you achieve on your own—but something you become together? In a culture that prizes independence, self-definition, and personal success, the African concept of Ubuntu offers a radically different starting point. Often summarized as “I am because we are,” Ubuntu challenges us to rethink identity, morality, and community through a deeply relational lens.
Rooted in traditional African ways of life, Ubuntu emerged from cultures where survival, meaning, and moral formation were inseparable from shared labor, kinship, elders, and ancestors. It shaped how people understood justice, responsibility, and what it meant to live well with one another. In more recent history, Ubuntu has informed movements of reconciliation and restorative justice—but its deeper questions remain just as urgent today.
This meetup isn’t about easy answers or abstract philosophy. It’s an invitation to wrestle with hard questions over good drinks: What do we owe one another? How does community shape freedom? And what happens to our humanity when we try to go it alone? Come curious, skeptical, thoughtful, or unsure—and be ready for a conversation that may quietly rearrange how you see yourself and the people around you.
As always, we will have our discussion while sipping on some delicious beer. The Table Public House boasts one of the best tap lists in the entire city. This isn't just our opinion, its also the opinion of a few Denver publications. Join us for tasty beer and an excellent topic!
