Details

Looking for a way to give back to the local climbing community, have fun, and meet other climbers?

Join the Volunteer Trail Work and Climbing Day at King's Landing, Saturday, May 31, 8:00am. The trail work will include building rock steps, improving the base area, and fixing the approach trails. Separate event hosts will setup some top ropes on nearby climbs.

Staunton climbing volunteers will provide all trail tools and lead the trail work. All participants will need to sign a CPW waiver. The approach to King's Landing is about a 10-minute hike and we will aim for about 4 to 5 hours of trail work. Trail work will include splitting rock, digging holes, moving rocks of all sizes, and learning how sustainable trails are built to resist erosion. In the afternoon, you are welcome to enjoy some top ropes on nearby climbs, break away to lead some climbs independently, or continue doing trail work with some of the trail leads.

  • When: Saturday, May 31, 8:00am
  • Where: meet at Lazy V Parking Lot at Staunton State Park, carpooling is encouraged. It takes about 10 minutes to drive from visitor center to Lazy V parking lot. No cell service at meeting lot.
  • What to Bring: work gloves, safety glasses, ear plugs, water, food, rain gear, sunscreen, climbing gear. Wear closed-toe shoes (no sandals or flip-flops). We will have a few pairs of extra gloves, glasses, and unused ear plugs.
  • Driving Directions: Warning. Some map apps have been wrong, cross check with these directions: US 285 to Elk Creek Road exit, N about 1.4 miles to Staunton State Park entrance on right (Staunton climbing maps available, if you do not have a park pass tell entrance attendant you’re there for climber trail work), drive up the park road about 1.5 miles to the Lazy V Parking Lot (there will be reserved parking for this event). If you run late, plan to join us at Kings Landing. DON'T SPEED, up the Staunton park road as speed is enforced by radar.

To help with planning and preparation, please RSVP ONLY If you plan on showing up, so we can get the correct number of tools ready, reserve parking, and coordinate enough trail leads.
