The Power of Common Knowledge: Why Teams Break When Information Isn’t Shared
We often assume that sharing information is enough to keep teams aligned. In reality, successful collaboration depends on something deeper: common knowledge. This happens when everyone knows something, and knows that everyone else knows it too.
In this presentation, Mackenzie Ostrem will explore how a lack of shared understanding leads to misalignment, slow decisions, and broken trust in software teams. Drawing on ideas from cognitive scientist Steven Pinker, she will examine why coordination fails when information lives in silos and how teams can intentionally create alignment, and run a short interactive exercise that demonstrates how easily misunderstandings spread and what teams can do to prevent them.
