About us
The Desert Photo Explorers is the group for all outdoor and landscape photographers who enjoy capturing the amazing natural beauty that is found all around Nevada, Utah, California, Arizona… And states beyond!
DPE welcomes outdoor photographers of all skills from beginner to professional, and fosters an inclusive environment of sharing knowledge and learning from each other. Events will visit both popular locations, and well as some of the lesser known spots, to put you in a position to come home with images that you make you proud! Timing will vary depending on event and location for the best possible success, whether that is sunrise, sunset, blue or golden hour, or even nighttime for astrophotography.
Some events may be free of charge, others could have a fee payable at the event location or due to the organizer. These will be outlined in the event page itself. Attending events could also result in additional costs such as transportation, splitting of gas if carpooling, food, lodging and all other expenses.
If you are looking forward to having some outdoor photo adventures, meeting new people, improving our photo skills and having fun then click that Join button to become the newest DPE member!

The Crazy Vehicles of the International Car Forest
The International Car Forest, Crystal Ave, Goldfield, NV, USOfficially, this location is known as the International Car Forest of the Last Church, but it is neither a forest (in the traditional sense) or a church (in the traditional sense). So what is it? The most crazy collection of old, abandoned cars, trucks, and other vehicles strewn about in odd formations and painted with graffiti and street art making some very unusual and fun photo subjects!
Click here for more information about the International Car Forest of the Last Church
MEETUP INFO:
We will meet at 5pm and then set off to shoot through the afternoon and into sunset. This tends to be a good spot for astrophotography so if anyone wants to stay we can plan for stars and experiment with light painting. As I recall, it can be a bit hard to find the location as signs are small and infrequent. You have to head down dirt roads, but they should be suitable for all vehicles.
The International Car Forest is around a 3 hour drive from Las Vegas. Please plan accordingly to arrive on time.
This location is near Goldfield, NV, a living ghost town. If you arrive early there are a lot of old, abandoned buildings, cars, railway equipment and other interesting subjects all around town. It’s the site for some of the (reportedly) most haunted buildings in the state!
MEETUP FEES:
There is no cost for this event.ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Consider bringing snacks or something to eat for dinner if you intend to stay into the evening for astrophotography, and of course plenty of water. It can cool off quickly so a jacket might be wise to have on hand as well. It is recommended that you wear closed toe shoes with a thick sole (such as hiking boots) and long pants.Parking is generally quite close to where we will be photographing, so if you forget a piece of equipment or decide that you actually do need that jacket it is just a short walk away.
If your plans change and you are unable to attend, please be courteous and cancel your RSVP so that someone else can attend.
Note that this site has a considerable amount of broken glass, exposed and sharp metal, and other hazards that you need to watch out for, especially in the dark!

Chasing Light in the Mojave Lava Tubes
The World's Tallest Thermometer, 72157 Baker Blvd, Baker, CA, USDeep in the Mojave Desert lies one of the region’s most unique and photogenic locations—the Mojave Lava Tubes. These volcanic tunnels offer a completely different landscape from the sandstone most of us are used to, with dark basalt walls, textured ceilings, and a rare chance to witness something truly special: beams of light cutting through the darkness.
While not guaranteed, under the right conditions sunlight can stream through openings above (~11:30am to 1:00pm), creating dramatic light rays inside the tubes. We’ll explore the area, photograph the unique geology, and—if luck is on our side—capture one of the most striking lighting effects in the desert.
MEETUP INFO:
We will meet at 9:30am at the The World's Tallest Thermometer in Baker, CA (I will be there early in a blue Subaru). This meetup location is around a 1.5 hour drive from Las Vegas, so please plan accordingly to arrive on time. From there, we will drive as a group to the Mojave Lava Tubes (~45min - ETA to trailhead of 10:30am). The road is passable for AWD/4WD Vehicles (expect washboards, some sand, occasional ruts).
MEETUP FEES:
There are no fees to enter the Mojave region.
There are no additional Meetup fees for this event.PHYSICAL ACTIVITY:
This event requires a short ~0.3 mile walk to the lava tubes. Getting down involves a metal staircase. Once inside the Lava Tube, you will be going over sharp rocky terrain and a slight crawl to get into the main chamber. The Mojave is very hot in June, so be prepared with sun protection (sunscreen and a hat) and plenty of water.
