Drone's-Eye View: Lava Butte

Just east of Las Vegas lies one of Southern Nevada's most colorful and overlooked landscapes. While Lava Butte is interesting from the ground, its true beauty reveals itself from above in the morning light, where layers of red, yellow, orange, and tan hills create abstract patterns that seem more at home in a painting than the Mojave Desert.

This event is specifically designed for drone photographers looking to capture a perspective that simply can't be appreciated from ground level. We'll explore the area at a relaxed pace, searching for the best aerial compositions, colorful ridgelines, winding washes, and the unique textures that make Lava Butte such a hidden gem. Whether you're an experienced pilot or just looking to gain more flight time in a spectacular location, this is a great opportunity to photograph one of the most drone-friendly landscapes near Las Vegas.

MEETUP INFO:
We will meet at 6:30am at Sunrise Trailhead. This is just a 30 minute drive from Las Vegas (on the east side of the city by Wetlands Park). Please plan accordingly to arrive on time.

From there, we will drive about 20 minutes down Lava Butte Road on a gravel road that is not recommended for low clearance vehicles. However, it does not require 4WD / AWD. Carpooling is available (I personally would have room for 3 passengers).

MEETUP FEES:
There are no fees for this event.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY:
There is minimal walking required, as we will drive into Lava Butte and be able to fly right from our vehicles. Those wishing to explore additional viewpoints may choose to walk short distances over uneven desert terrain.

Please ensure your drone is charged, updated, and ready to fly prior to arrival.
