For month three, we are taking a well-deserved palette cleanser: Starter Villain by John Scalzi.
After the deep, heavy, and systemic themes of our last read, this read is all about wit, satire, and subverting expectations. The premise follows Charlie Fitzer, a down-on-his-luck substitute teacher, who discovers that his late, estranged uncle was a literal international supervillain. Now not only has Charlie inherited his uncle's estate, but also his enemies, his hidden volcano lair, and his staff (which includes highly intelligent spy cats and snarky dolphins). It’s the perfect brain break that still gives our roundtable plenty to discuss. As always you a welcome even if you haven't finished the book, but spoilers are fair game!
For a book all about secret volcano lairs and elite international syndicates, a standard patio just wouldn't cut it. We needed a proper villain lair so we are meeting at Pig Tails, the hidden speakeasy tucked behind Whining Pig right at the center of Desert Ridge. Between the moody low lighting, craft cocktails, and the live moss wall, it is the perfect backdrop to deconstruct corporate wealth and supervillain culture.
