Improving SQL Performance using Indexing

As software developers, we use databases in our everyday lives, and RDBMS more often than all other types of databases.

If we have to improve query performance, our immediate instinct is to ask “Is the Index working?”. Surely, it is not the only way to improve performance. Indexing is also not a silver bullet. A question we should ask, however, is are we using this “simple” tool, even with all its limitations, to its full potential?
