January DevOps Meetup - Monitoring

Details

We've got a great presentation and conversations lined up for January. Not to mention, great beer and free pizza.

Mike DelNegro (https://www.meetup.com/DevOpsDC/members/4106451/), from AOL, will be previewing his Percona Live (http://www.percona.com/live/dc-2012/schedule/) talk on Monitoring & Trending with MySQL (http://www.percona.com/live/dc-2012/session/monitoring-and-trending-with-mysql/) and we'll have lightning talks and discussions about other monitoring topics.

What do you monitor? What tools do you use? How do you expose your monitors? How do you alert / what do you alert on? Agenda:

6:30 - 7:00 Meet, greet, and eat 7:00 - 7:15 Welcome and Introductions 7:15 - 8:30 Presentations & Discussion Monitoring & Trending with MySQL - Mike DelNegro (https://www.meetup.com/DevOpsDC/members/4106451/) (AOL) - Learn best practices for MySQL monitoring and historical metrics collection. We'll discuss what you should monitor in MySQL. A common mistake is to monitor too many things, thus causing false alarms and leading your team to ignore real problems. At the same time, many users don't capture enough metrics to help them diagnose problems or understand their capacity planning needs. Balancing these two needs, and understanding the difference between fault detection and historical metrics, is important for building a reliable infrastructure.

3-5 Lightning talks about monitoring. Please contact Nathen (https://www.meetup.com/DevOpsDC/members/9746108/) if you've got something to share about monitoring. Maybe a tool you'd like to demo, etc.

Demo of Circonus (http://circonus.com/) How Clearspring (http://www.clearspring.com/) uses CodaHale's metrics project (https://github.com/codahale/metrics), ganglia (http://ganglia.sourceforge.net/), and graphite (http://graphite.wikidot.com/) to monitor cluster hardware and applications. Overview of Cacti (http://www.cacti.net/) ?? contact Nathen if you'd like to present. Open discussion about monitoring.

8:30 - 9:00 General networking, etc.
