Towards a decentralized delivery of infrastructure: A data platform journey

Summary
In the early stages of building a data platform, things tend to look neat and tidy. There’s usually a centralized platform engineering team — a group of experts who are often responsible for fulfilling demand over several infrastructure components through Infrastructure as Code (IaC) in different application domains. At first, this centralized model works well: a single team controls quality, standards, and deployment processes.

But then… growth happens. Demand surges as more users rely on the platform to build and run applications. New use cases emerge, teams want to move faster and suddenly the platform team can no longer keep up with the volume and diversity of requests.
