What we’re about
So, there's a lot of us, devs, here in Crete. And every month - from 2015 (!!!) - we get together and discuss some community-chosen topic of interest. This group is an attempt at bringing us all together for informal chats about what we're all passionate about: technology and software. Join the meet up, learn, teach, speak your mind, sharpen your skills, share the knowledge and help us build a community where devs can openly exchange ideas !

Programming for kids & New Year's Cake (kopi pitas!)
Science and Technology Park of Crete - Step-C, Nik. Plastira 70013, Iraklio, GRJoin us for an exciting evening at our Greek tech meetup, where innovation meets creativity! This event will feature two engaging presentations that delve into the world of programming through playful and interactive methods. Attendees will discover how LEGO robotics sets can demystify programming concepts such as loops and conditionals through hands-on activities. Additionally, they will discover the popular visual programming language Scratch and its vibrant community. We will also have an open discussion for whoever would like to pitch in their experience. Together, we'll discover how to create fun projects as if we were in a classroom setting with our kids. To celebrate the New Year, don't miss the delightful tradition of cutting the New Year's cake with fellow tech enthusiasts!
Presentations
- Scratch, building programs using visual blocks and more (en/el 30 mins) - Foivos Zakkak
In this presentation we will learn about the visual programming language Scratch and the community around it. We will explore the development environment and build a couple of things together (like we would do with our kids) - Programming with LEGO (en/el 40 mins) - Mihalis Zampetakis
This presentation introduces how LEGO robotics sets (such as Mindstorms, SPIKE, and WeDo) can be used to teach and explore programming through hands-on building and experimentation. We will start with a brief overview of the platforms and its target audience, then demonstrate the core programming concepts like loops, conditionals, and sensors are applied in real LEGO models. The talk will conclude with a live demo of an example project, showing how a LEGO model is built, programmed, and iteratively improved while highlighting the underlying programming concepts in action. - Open discussion (en/el 20 mins) - Anyone
We will have an open discussion for whoever else has insightful tips and experience for how to transmit tech and programming knowledge to kids.
We'll also have live streaming for those who won't be able to join in-person. The link will be posted a few minutes before the event starts.
🎁 During our meetup we will have separate raffles for the participants to win:
- 2 DevStaff T-Shirts
- 2 JetBrains licenses
Pizzas, beers and... socialising!
At the end of the meetup we will have the opportunity to discuss and socialise with some pizzas and beers! 🍕 🍺
