Description

Designing Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) can feel terrifying at first… but it’s not as hard as you might think!

And PCBs are super versatile: beyond electronics, you can use them to make lamp shades, box panels, jewelry, game pieces… Your imagination is the limit!

In this beginner friendly workshop, we’ll go over the basics of PCB design, with a particular focus on making beautiful "artistic" PCBs.

We will:

• learn the software required for PCB design
• look at references to understand the esthetic appeal of PCBs, and explore unconventional creative uses
• import graphics into your board design (eg. from Illustrator or ProCreate)
• learn how to place an order and get your board manufactured and assembled by JLCPCB.com

We will start with designing a simple circuit with a LED, a switch and a coin cell battery, then customize it over the course of the workshop. You can turn into a badge, Christmas decoration, part of your cosplay outfit, a business card… whatever you feel like!

By the end of the workshop you’ll have a unique design that’s ready to order. You will have learned the skills required to design and manufacture your own PCBs, and will have been exposed to references and rich conversations enabling you to elevate your designs.

This workshop is beginner friendly. No prior electronics experience is needed.

About the instructor:

I’m Sam, an artist and creative technologist based in Berlin and visiting Hong Kong and Shenzhen for a few weeks. I’ve been working with electronics, programming and fabrication for the past 7 years. I have a particular interest in interactive installations where the viewer is invited to explore, touch and play with the piece.

As my projects became more complex, I had the need to build custom PCBs; and what at first seemed like an obscure, intimidating task, turned out to be very fulfilling and inspiring. I've been playing with PCBs ever since! I love to share my knowledge and can't wait to see what you build with it!
