ABSTRACT
Introduction to the Metaverse and Decentraland
The term "Metaverse" has gained significant traction since Mark Zuckerberg rebranded Facebook as Meta. Initially coined in a 90s book, it is now ubiquitous, with projections suggesting it could drive trillion-dollar growth in the digital economy by 2030. Despite this optimism, there are critics who argue the Metaverse is obsolete in the age of AI. In this presentation, I'll provide an overview of the Metaverse, its definition, adoption, and application. I'll argue that it's still in its early stages, particularly for blockchain-enabled platforms like Decentraland, Sandbox, and Somnium Space, where generative AI is accelerating development.

I'll then delve into Decentraland and its ecosystem, highlighting how it contributes to the decentralised digital economy. This includes its virtual lands (NFTs), Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) governance, and its empowerment of digital architects and content creators. Additionally, I'll explore how prominent organisations, including governments and financial institutions, are utilising Decentraland as their entry point into the Metaverse.

BIOS
Ryuk (not his real name) previously worked for Fortune 500 financial organisations, and is currently an intelligence analyst for a Web3 organisation. He has spoken at various conferences globally, including in India, Hungary, Romania and the U.S. and continues to deepen his knowledge in the areas of Blockchain, Metaverse and Web3. Ryuk is also a Decentraland Ambassador and has spent much of his evenings researching and participating in the Web3 ecosystem as well as exploring the metaverse.
