More than just physics: what does the security of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) really depend on?
With the world preparing for the advent of quantum computers that can break currently deployed public key algorithms, the privacy and authenticity of our communications is under threat. QKD is one of the ways of protecting ourselves from this threat, and that its security is based on fundamental physics. I will examine the basic promise of QKD, and then talk about the issues that arise from practical implementations of QKD. I ask (and answer) the question, what does the security of QKD depend on?

“Hardware Root of Trust”
The root of trust refers to the essential security component that provides the fundamental function from which the layers of security systems are derived. This is typically the component that generates, stores, or provides the secret key, and ensures the key is secure. Protecting this secret is essential as the whole security will be compromised if the secret is exposed. We believe that the most secure root of trust is in hardware. In this talk, we will share our approach to the design of hardware root of trust and other hardware related security products.

BIOS
Ian Chan – D’Crypt Principal Engineer
Ian Chan has a PhD in Physics from Harvard University, where he investigated the properties of semiconductor quantum dots. Since then, he has worked at Stanford Research Systems developing more sensitive instruments to measure signals in the midst of noise. He currently works at D’Crypt on high-performance computing projects and technologies to make D’Crypt’s products safe against quantum computers

Dr Pang Liang Teck — D’Crypt SVP and GM, ST Engineering Cyber Chief Product Officer
Dr Pang Liang Teck is the General Manager of ST Engineering D’Crypt. He obtained his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 2008 and joined IBM’s TJ Watson Research Center in New York as a research scientist on advanced chip design. In 2012, he returned to Singapore and joined D’Crypt to start chip design work. He led a team to develop D’Crypt’s FIPS 140-2 level 4 single chip processor as well as other ASICs for the Singapore government. He currently holds a second portfolio as the Chief Product Officer in ST Engineering’s Cyber Business Area. This role enables D’Crypt to bring their expertise in building high performance, low power and high security products to the rest of ST Engineering.
