What we’re about
This is a group dedicated to reading and discussing Persian (Farsi) poetry, in translation or otherwise, with an emphasis on appreciating the aesthetic and philosophical depth of the poetic tradition. We avoid orientalism, free verse, and much of the new-age baggage that tends to be attached to authors like Rumi in contemporary culture, which often erases the distinctly Muslim nature of the work and the formal sophistication of Persian poetry. This group was founded in response to the fact that nothing comparable seems to exist on Meetup in the DMV. All are welcome.
