Launching 'Doughnut Schools'

Details
What changes do we need to make to transform our 20th century economic models based on growth into 21st century models based on environmental and social sustainability? How do we turn the economic models of a Doughnut Economy into a reality?
One essential approach is to teach our children about the actual practice of caring for the environment and each other in a way that previous generations were denied. To achieve this, tonight we are launching the concept of 'Doughnut Schools' and present the work DEANZ is doing to make this a reality.
Tonight, James Watson, Chair of DEANZ, will be joined by guest speakers:
- Rachel MacIntyre, School of Future Environments, AUT University and PTA member with Newton Central School;
- Tim Bowater, composting expert, the CarbonCycle Company;
-Wendy Watson-Ekstein and Jaya Muddaiah, DEANZ Repair Cafes project management.
Together, we will launch the Doughnut Schools scheme.
In this presentation, the DEANZ team will report on the significant steps that have been taken at Newton Central School and Summerland School in Auckland's western suburbs to realise the 'Doughnut Schools' vision. Team members will relate how doughnut economics thinking about the environment - by reducing landfill, composting, and growing healthy food - can go hand in hand with meeting social needs - by growing cultural connections between schools and their surrounding communities.
The Doughnut Schools concept offers a tangible step towards achieving our vision of what 21st century thinking is all about.
