Talk #1 from Yevhen Zavhorodnii - OpenTracing to OpenTelemetry
Yevhen is a principal SRE at Ticketmaster, and previously Platform Engineer at Cookpad, and Senior Software Engineer at Schlumberger (SLB), Yevhen has ~15 years of experience overall on different positions. He is actively using Go and Rust to successfully manage challenges of reliability and stability of Ticketmaster services as part of central SRE consultancy team.
OpenTracing was a great initiative for vendor neutral instrumentation for distributed tracing which unfortunately got deprecated in favour of OpenTelemetry.
Yevhen will walk through the intense challenges and innovative approaches involved in migrating 500+ services to align with the latest cloud-native best practices, all while the company faced the added pressure of phasing out its OpenTracing provider amidst the deprecation.
Talk #2 from Carl Marshall - "I wouldn’t start from here…"
Coincidentally since joining the Oxford DevOps community post-revival, Carl and colleagues have embarked on the interesting journey of assembling and implementing a brand-new DevOps team within a well-known (and well established) organisation. But building something new from existing parts is never a straightforward process. This session offers a candid look at the journey so far: how and why it started, the challenges they’ve faced, the lessons learned along the way, and their vision(s) for the future.
Guiding the discussion is Carl Marshall, a seasoned tech development professional with 25 years of experience spanning a wide range of roles, from literal 1-man-band full-stack developer to a key player in larger-structured teams. Now operating within a major national organisation, he’s bringing a behind-the-screens perspective on what it is taking to build a “healthy" DevOps culture.
We want this session to be more than just about storytelling—and we offer an opportunity to engage, exchange ideas, and shape the future of this new team, together. Whether you’re just starting your DevOps journey or a seasoned professional, join us for an insightful, occasionally irreverent (often opinionated) and open discussion about what it means to do DevOps and how we might collectively nurse the growth of this team.
