Harz II: Hike to the Witch’s Playground
Details
Follow in the footsteps of witches and warlocks as you explore enchanting forests, rugged mountain peaks, and crystal-clear streams.
WHY GO?
The East of the Harz Mountains is a well-kept secret among locals.. Far enough away from the tourist attractions of Brocken and Wernigerode, we will venture off-the beaten path to the beautiful hiking trails of the valley of Bodetal.
The final stage of the Hexenstieg, also known as the Grand Canyon of Germany, offers breathtaking views of steep cliffs, rushing waterfalls, and lush forests. We will also visit the Hexentanzplatz viewpoint, a mystical plateau where witches were said to gather, and La Viershöhe, a scenic viewpoint overlooking the valley of Bodetal.
The adventure continues with a hike to Roßtrappe (Horse's Leap), a spectacular rock formation with a shape resembling a horse's head. According to legend, a beautiful princess once rode her horse to the edge of the cliff and leaped over the valley to escape from an evil prince.
### WHAT ARE THE HIGHLIGHTS?

The valley stretches for over 10 kilometers, with towering cliffs rising up to 200 meters on either side. The Bode River flows through the valley, creating a series of cascading waterfalls and rapids, and adding to the valley's breathtaking natural beauty.

The town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its old town is filled with architectural gems such as the castle complex, the Stiftskirche (a Romanesque church), and the Münzenberg (a medieval hilltop fortification).
