  • Chertsey Museum Exhibition - Dressed is Best (Day Trip)

I am planning on seeing this FREE exhibition before it finishes! Below is some info from their website. Dressing for best is an important part of the way we mark significant events, and donning one’s smartest clothes in order to attend a special function can be an extremely enjoyable if sometimes daunting experience. ‘Best dress’ is all about making a statement. It is a key aspect of celebrating a momentous occasion, and perhaps most importantly it allows individuals, adorned in the most impressive way possible, to mark themselves out as special. This year's fashion exhibition explores the social statements behind some of the Olive Matthews Collection's most lavish and iconic pieces. More information on the website here: http://www.chertseymuseum.org/costume-exhibition Getting there: My plan is to get the 10:22 train from Waterloo. This train is direct and takes 1hr 10 minutes and the museum is a 10 minute walk from Chertsey station. Let's meet at 10 am at Waterloo. Currently a super off peak return is £13.20, but if there are a few of us we can look at getting a group ticket. I also thought that it might be nice to have a late lunch in a nearby Chertsey pub after the exhibit for those that fancy it. Let me know if you are interested and I will book a table.

  • Virtual Sewalong: Tanya Whelan Cowl Dress - 18 May to 31 July

    This is a virtual event

Another free pattern from my to-do list. A vintage inspired dress with bias cut cowl bodice and a slightly flared gored skirt. This one was featured in Issue 23 of Love Sewing Magazine but you don't need the magazine as you can just download the pattern and instructions by creating a login for their website. The pattern was designed by Tanya Whelan for her book "Sew Many Dresses, Sew Little Time". I don't have the book but it seems to have positive reviews so hopefully this is a good pattern. As on their sizing they have put 1, 2, 3 rather than 8, 10, 12, etc I'm not sure what regular sizes they correspond with. I have included the size chart in the photo album - seems to be a wide range (from 32 to 50 & 1/2 inch bust). Due to limitations in the meetup software this needs to be given date / times to set up the "event" but the idea is to start making and posting to this "event" any time from Sat 18th May with the target to finish by Sun 23rd June. I've scheduled it so the time period includes 6 weekends - let me know if you think I should make it longer. If you're super keen you can make / post earlier but I don't think I will start mine until May. Looking forward to see everyone's version! ---------------------------------------------------------- Love Sewing Mag Issue 23 cowl dress pattern and instructions: https://www.lovesewingmag.co.uk/product/cowl-dress/ ---------------------------------------------------------- ** NOTE: For those that are new to the group - anything put in as a virtual sewalong doesn't mean that we all log in "somewhere" and do "something" at the time of the placeholder event. We are just working around the way the meetup software is set up by adding it as an event. There is set time period (see elsewhere in this summary for specific dates) when everyone will work on their own project at home and add comments / photos of their ideas / progress / finished product. The end date of this is a deadline rather than a meeting. You can still add photos after it has moved to past events if you are running late with your project.

  • Virtual Sewalong: Peppermint Jumpsuit or Playsuit - 4 May to 31 July

Let's do some fun summer sewing! Here is a choice of 2 free patterns created for Peppermint magazine by Into the Folds. You should be able to find many blogger reviews for these online. When I had a quick look I saw a few for the jumpsuit by bloggers of different shapes / sizes, it seems popular. Also lots on instagram under #peppermintjumpsuit #peppermintplaysuit As on their sizing they have put A, B, C rather than 8, 10, 12, etc I'm not sure what regular sizes they correspond with. I have included the size charts in the photo album - seems to be a wide range (from 30 to 51 inch bust). Make 1 or both styles. I'm planning on making the blue one either as shown in the photo or shorter. If you're not sure that you would wear a jumpsuit / playsuit out and about (although don't knock it until you try it...) they would still be great for lounging around in at home. Due to limitations in the meetup software this needs to be given date / times to set up the "event" but the idea is to start making and posting to this "event" any time from Sat 4th May with the target to finish by Sun 23rd June. Looking forward to see everyone's version! ---------------------------------------------------------- Issue 35 Jumpsuit pattern and instructions: https://peppermintmag.com/sewing-school/jumpsuit/ * Note: the jumpsuit pattern is bit paper hungry (50 pages) but there are some pages that only have the belt / sash that you could not print and just measure up some fabric separately or use an existing belt. You can see the pattern pages layout in the instructions file Issue 40 Playsuit pattern and instructions: https://peppermintmag.com/sewing-school/playsuit/ ---------------------------------------------------------- *** NOTE: For those that are new to the group - anything put in as a virtual sewalong doesn't mean that we all log in "somewhere" and do "something" at the time of the placeholder event. • Monthly Dressmakers meeting

    EV Delicatessen (correct post code)

Let's meet up to do a bit of hand sewing, exchange sewing tips and share project notes with other people who love to sew! I will schedule these monthly meetings for Tue, Wed and Thu per quarter. This way people will be able to make at least some meetings if they cannot do a specific weekday. You may want to bring a project to hand sew or baste, cut out paper patterns, mark up fabric or anything else that's easily done by hand. If you are not that far along: how about bringing a magazine or sewing book, a dress pattern, photos of examples, scraps of material - anything to show and tell us what you are hoping to make. If you would like some advice because you ran into an issue or have some general questions: others members are bound to have ideas of what to try, or advice about where to look for answers. This monthly meetup can be as social as you would like or as much of a sit down and sew occasion as you want. Let's also discuss ideas for future workshops and themed evenings or outings. All suggestions are welcome! EV Delicatessen are very good in just letting us get on with it, and we are hopefully good customers for them. They do a nice variety of food and beverages, and you can even do some grocery shopping there too. Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

  • Picnic and photo shoot in Regents Park

    Regent's Park

Time for our Summer social! Let's have a picnic in Regents Park. We can catch-up and share how our summer sewing plans have gone and for anyone that would like pictures taken of sewn summer garments, Regents Park will be a great backdrop. Let's meet a the bandstand in the park at 13:00. See below for a map of the park and bring any picnic type snacks that you might like to snack on! https://www.royalparks.org.uk/parks/the-regents-park/map-of-regents-park. I will keep an eye on the weather and if it is set to be bad we can relocate to somewhere close to Baker street.
