Philosophy of Space and Time
What is space? What is time?

Parking info: The parking lot may be busy; u can find street parking on Mayview Ave residential area instead.

We will examine the following aspects:

  • Are space, time and their properties a priori or empirical?
  • What is the relationship between space, time and worldly objects?
  • Are they part of the external world, or part of the human mind and intuition? Externality vs Internality
  • What is the difference between mathematical space and physical space?
  • Brief review of Non-Euclidean Geometry covered in previous sessions.
  • Did special/general relativity expand our understanding of space and time, and how are space and time in modern physics related to Kantian space and time?
  • Is physical space Euclidean?
  • What is the difference between space and time?
  • Space and real numbers: The concept of length and area, and the problem of incommensurable. The real number line and the continuum.
  • What is spacetime according to quantum mechanics?
  • Mathematical space and its relation to set theory and mathematical logic.
  • (advanced topics: Riemann Manifold, Hilbert space etc)

Best,
Wesley
