Please join us for the first Druid meetup of 2021! We have an exciting lineup planned featuring talks from some of the world’s most adept Apache Druid experts. If you can't make it, please RSVP anyway so we can share the recording with you after the event!

AGENDA

3–3:25pm: Dan Prince from Target discusses their self-service data ingestion solution, which simplifies Druid ingestion for hundreds of non-engineer users.
3:25–3:35pm: Q&A

3:35–4pm: Vadim Ogievetsky from Imply talks data modeling and presents a demo.
4–4:10pm: Q&A

4:10–4:25pm Gian Merlino from Imply will share the latest and greatest updates for Druid roadmap.
4:25-4:30pm: Q&A

TALK ABSTRACTS

Talk #1: Target is one of the largest retailers in the United States, with brick-and-mortar stores in all 50 states and one of the most-visited e-commerce sites in the country. In addition to typical merchandising functions like assortment planning, pricing and inventory management, Target also operates a large supply chain, financial/banking and property management organizations. Our home-grown, multi-tenant Druid-based analytics and data visualization tool supports a large user base from diverse business units throughout the enterprise. When Target Data Sciences set out to build this system, ingestion presented two major challenges:

  • How could we make it easy for data scientists and business analysts to get their data into Druid, without needing assistance from engineers?
  • How could it scale to thousands of ingest jobs and billions of rows of data per day?

The tool we built simplifies Druid ingestion, allowing most users to ingest their data without having to understand critical Druid concepts like segment granularity and the importance of the timeseries column. At the same time, it allows advanced users to design the data ingestion processes to power their Druid datasources for high query performance. Today, it supports more than 1500 users ingesting nearly one trillion rows of data per month from dozens of different source systems/technologies.

Bio: Dan Prince is a Lead Engineer at Target Data Sciences. Prior to Target, he was a Principal Architect at Pearson and jack-of-all-trades tech guy for two startups. He holds an MS in Computer Engineering from the University of Wisconsin Madison.

Talk #2: The future is here! Have you ever wished that you could build more of your ingestion spec in the Druid Unified Console? Well, some wishes do come true! Vadim O, an Apache Druid OG, has bestowed the Unified Console with some serious Druid data modeling magic. Come join for a demo and to hear what else is up his sleeve!

Bio: Vadim is a co-founder and CPO at Imply, where he uses Plywood with React to build open source UIs on top of Druid. Prior to Imply, he worked as a UI lead at Metamarkets (acquired by Snapchat). In 2011 he graduated from Stanford University with a M.S. in Computer Science . At Stanford he was part of the Data Visualization group where he contributed to Protovis and D3.js. His open-source development is now focused on Plywood and other Big Data visualization tools.

Talk #3: Gian will talk about Druid news, including details about the latest roadmap and releases.

Bio: Gian is a co-founder and CTO of Imply. Gian is also one of the main committers of Druid. Previously, Gian led the data ingestion team at Metamarkets and held senior engineering positions at Yahoo. He holds a B.S. in Computer Science from Caltech.
