About us

This is a monthly get-together for people who want to have inappropriately serious conversations with strangers, mostly about ancient Rome, while drinking. Although, strictly speaking, the drinking part is optional. (The Romans usually watered their wine anyway.)

No prior knowledge of Roman history, Latin, or anything else is required or expected. There are no fixed topics and no formal rules. Expect a table full of interesting people engaged in many different conversations: the fall of the Republic, whether Nero deserves his reputation, what legionaries actually ate, Roman law, religion, engineering, and whether the Empire really "fell" at all.

Everyone is welcome at Drunken Romans! Unless you are an asshole. Disagreement and conflict are part of the fun of a group built around having serious conversations, but if you make other people feel unsafe or unwelcome you will be asked to leave. Fortunately, this is almost never necessary because most of us are awesome. If you are a racist or sexist asshole you will be especially unwelcome. The classical world has too often been claimed by a narrow few and misused to prop up ugly ideas, but we here at Drunken Romans want to help change that. Rome stretched from Britannia to Syria to North Africa, and the people who talk about it should be just as varied.

So come meet cranks, fanatics, pedants, reenactors, Latin nerds, and tons of friendly people who know a lot about Rome and other topics. And cross the Rubicon at Life of Pie Pizza. In vino veritas.
