Distance 82kms, 740 ascent
Join us for a cycle out from Drogheda to Monasterboice via Mellifont Abbey, returning to Dublin via Drogheda, Bellewstown and Oldtown. This is a route with numerous hills including a long steep ascent to Bellewstown.
Here is the plan for the day:
- Meeting outside Drogheda train station at 10.25am.
- We cycle to Mellifont Abbey from Drogheda, passing through King Williams Glen and Tullyallen on route. We continue to Monasterboice round tower and high cross before returning to Drogheda on another road.
- We will stop to view both the 13th century abbey at Mellifont and also the monastic site/ round tower at Monasterboice.
- From Monasterboice we return to Drogheda where we will have a coffee/lunch stop at the Salthouse cafe/restaurant before returning to Dublin on mostly quiet backroads through Bellewstown, Four Knocks Passage tomb, Oldtown and St Margaret’s.
- You can travel to Drogheda on the Dublin to Belfast train from Connolly Station at 09.50, arriving in Drogheda at 10.25.Please book your bikes when booking your ticket.
- Alternatively you can travel on the Dublin to Drogheda commuter train that leaves Connolly Station at 09.27, arriving in Drogheda at 1024. You can bring your bicycle on Irish Rail commuter trains without having to book a space for them.
Please wear a helmet and bring a tube etc in case you get a puncture.
Please note - It is every participant's responsibility to ride safely, follow the rules of the road, and come prepared with the proper equipment.
