For this meetup, we will be reading What We Owe The Future by William MacAskill. We'll start by reading the first two parts of the book (up to page 102).

The author, William MacAskill, is a founding member of the effective altruism movement and a cofounder of "80,000 Hours" and "Giving What We Can". While his previous book "Doing Good Better" examines how we can effectively make a difference in the lives of those living today, this book explores longtermism - the idea that our actions today will have an impact on the untold number of future people.

I've found this book to be a great introduction to many concepts in effective altruism such as existential threat and population ethics in a relatively interesting and easy-to-read format. I would recommend this book to anyone who's interested whether or not you have a background in effective altruism!

The book is currently available from the Albuquerue library as a hard copy or ebook

Looking forward to seeing everyone there!
