• • • WHAT IS EARTH FIRST!

Earth First! is an international grassroots movement composed of a loose network of small, regional autonomous groups of eco-activists. Established in 1980 by Dave Foreman and other conservation leaders, Earth First! does not have a centralized organization, nor does it have a formal leadership structure. Rather, Earth First! represents a banner under which like-minded people with pro-earth philosophies, values, and principles can unite in common purpose and bold action. Earth Firsters! apply a strategic combination of green education, creative civil disobedience, and direct action measures to confront apathy and ignorance; halt threats to the local environment; influence public or corporate policy, and urge consumers to take greater personal responsibility for the way their lifestyle choices impact the natural world.

• • • WHO SHOULD JOIN

Earth Firsters! are passionate and courageous defenders of Mother Earth, who are tired of letting governments, corporations, and public indifference furiously destroy the fragile eco-system and planet’s future. Unlike other mainstream environmental organizations, Earth Firsters! take a more pro-active, boots-on-the-ground (but lawful and non-violent) approach to raising awareness of the ecological crisis, creating support and shifting attitudes, and promoting eco-friendly living in order to help mitigate and restore the ecological imbalance of our world. Earth Firsters! recognize that time is running out, and we’re in a fight for the very survival of the planet.

Earth First! Tokyo welcomes those who can generally subscribe to the core Earth First Statement of Principles below. If you believe actions speak louder than words, then Earth First! is for you.

• • • EARTH FIRST! STATEMENT OF PRINCIPLES

- In any decision, consideration for the well-being of the Earth should come FIRST, even ahead of human interest or benefit. The movement is called “Earth First!” not “People First!” The only true test of morality is whether an action, individual, social, or political, benefits Earth.

- All life forms have an inherent and equal right to existence. We believe that all living things are interconnected and hold intrinsic value (biocentrism). Nature does not exist to serve humans. Rather, humans are a part of nature, representing only one species among many.

- The natural world is the real world and has the right to exist for its own sake.

- Humankind is no greater than any other form of life and has no legitimate claim to dominate Earth. Humankind, through overpopulation, anthropocentrism, industrialization, excessive energy consumption, resource extraction, imperialism, pollution, and natural area destruction, threatens the basic life processes of Earth.

- A key element in the Earth First! initiative is humor. As Saul Alinsky writes, "Ridicule is man's most potent enemy."

• • • WORKING OBJECTIVES & TACTICS

- Hold local EF! gatherings to brainstorm, strategize, plan, debrief, socialize, celebrate, or just enjoy the great outdoors.

- Practice and promote Reduce-Reuse-Recycle-Refuse to conserve natural resources.

- Commit to reducing our overall impact on the natural environment.

- Minimize or refrain from the use of single-use plastics, e.g. shopping bags, packaging, PET bottles, cups, straws.

- Shop and eat locally.

- Educate and inform through multi-lingual handouts, articles & public presentations.

- Promote or practice vegetarianism & veganism.

- Move toward a sustainable energy policy that does not rely on fossil fuels or nuclear power.

- Work to end industrial farming techniques (factory farming) and animal exploitation.

- Generate local media attention and coverage of EF! activities and principles.

- Lobby government & corporations to abolish unsustainable policies and adopt earth-friendly ones.

- Stage and participate in protests, demonstrations, or marches.

- Collaborate with other local pro-environment groups and activities.

- Have fun and keep a sense of humor!

アース・ファースト！は、エコ活動家の小規模で地域の自主管理団体がゆるやかに結びついたネットワークで構成される、国際的な草の根運動です。1980年にデイブ・フォアマンとその他の環境保護リーダーによって設立されたアース・ファースト！（Earth First!）には、中央集権的な組織も、公式のリーダーシップ構造もありません。むしろアース・ファースト！は、地球環境保護に積極的な哲学、価値観、主義を持っている志を同じくする人々が、共通の目的と大胆な活動で団結する理念を表しています。アース・ファースト！支持者は、グリーン教育、市民による創造的不服従、無関心や無知への対抗、地域環境への脅威の阻止、公共政策や企業方針への影響拡大、そして消費者がライフスタイルの選択により自然界に影響を及ぼす場合に、より大きな個人的責任を分担するよう促進するなど、直接行動の手段を戦略的に組み合わせて活動しています。

- いかなる決定においても、人間の利益や恩恵よりも先に、地球の幸福への配慮が最優先されるべきです。この運動は、「人間ファースト！」ではなく、「アース・ファースト！」と呼ばれています。倫理観を分ける唯一の評価基準は、活動、個人、社会、政治が地球に恩恵をもたらしているか否かです。

- すべての生命体には固有かつ平等な生存権があります。私たちは、すべての生物が互いに関係し合い、本質的価値を有すると信じています（生物中心主義）。自然は、人間に仕えるために存在しているのではありません。むしろ、人間は自然の一部であり、多くの種の中のひとつにすぎません。
