An evening with Pacific Northwest architect and author Ross Chapin

Pocket Neighborhoods have nearby neighbors coming together around a shared commons. These small-scale settings foster a sense of community while preserving personal privacy. EBCOHO note: several area cohousing neighborhoods are featured in the book, including some of the best-ever photos of Berkeley Cohousing (at an EBCOHO scheduled event!), Temescal Creek, and Swan's Market Cohousing. Plus intergenerational and senior cohousing from around the world.

Ross Chapin will offer a presentation on this topic for professionals and the general public, sharing stories of communities from around the world, their historic precedents, and the key design principles that give them vitality.

Ross Chapin, FAIA, an architect, land planner and author from Seattle, WA, has pioneered this approach for 18 years. He has designed dozens of neighborhood plans for developers across the US and Canada, and has been a development partner on 7 pocket neighborhoods, several which have received national housing awards. His book was featured in USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and was on Planetizen’s 2012 Top 10 list of urban planning books.
