Building a more resilient and connected Berkeley:
Introducing resilience hubs, spaces and networks

BDPNN has focused mainly on personal preparedness and neighborhood groups, but this month we turn our focus to community spaces. East Bay Cohousing will be participating to share how #cohousing and #ecovillages have and can serve as Resilience Hubs.

Join the Berkeley Disaster Preparedness Neighborhood Network and local nonprofit Collective Resilience in this interactive workshop, to learn about one of the most promising and equitable approaches to scaling up local resilience for both slow-moving and immediate disasters: resilience hubs. We will explore ways that trusted community spaces and public facilities - from libraries to community centers, schools to senior centers - have and could be used to both strengthen community relationships and support neighborhood groups and vulnerable populations during disasters. If you are a community leader and/or connected to a community space, we really welcome your input!

During the workshop participants will:

LEARN about community resilience: We will address climate disasters and ongoing challenges - including extreme heat, rising food prices and wildfires - and introduce resilience hubs, spaces and networks as models. Learn about Berkeley’s history with its own resilience hubs program (Community Resilience Centers); and explore models from around the country.

CONNECT WITH NEIGHBORS AND COMMUNITY LEADERS:

Participate in a fun hands-on climate disaster exercise to explore how community spaces can be transformed into life-saving hubs, and utilized by neighborhood groups.

TAKE ACTION: Come away with small steps you can take to develop a network of resilience hubs. As well, we will start to map out Berkeley’s existing resilience resources and discuss ways to integrate them into the BDPNN Network and Platform.

About Resilience Hubs, Spaces & Networks: Many cities around the country are moving beyond traditional "emergency response" to build decentralized networks of community spaces serving as resilience hubs (also called “community resilience centers”) - libraries, community centers, places of worship and other trusted sites in our community transformed to both build social cohesion and prepare and respond to disasters. They are centered on equity, sustainability, and deep relationship building with the goal that support is always within a "15-minute walking radius" of those who need it most.
