Graeme Bowman - Empire First, Churchill's War on D-Day
Greenock-born historian Dr. Graeme Bowman shatters the cosy consensus around Churchill and Britain’s role in WWII – did Churchill really try to sabotage D-Day because he prioritised British oil and Empire interests in the Mediterranean over liberating western Europe from fascism? Bowman’s book – ‘Empire First: Churchill’s War Against D-Day’ - completely re-thinks WWII and has been endorsed by eminent historians Sir Tom Devine and Richard Overy. His controversial new analysis is entirely evidence-based, so come along and make your own mind up at Edinburgh Skeptics on Weds 5th November.
Graeme Bowman was born and brought up in Greenock. After a brief spell in the Merchant Navy, he studied history at Strathclyde University, Carnegie-Mellon University (Pittsburgh) and King’s College, Cambridge. ‘Empire First’ is his first book and it argues that Churchill - the ‘Greatest Ever Briton’ - tried to sabotage D-Day because he prioritised British oil and Empire interests in the Mediterranean over liberating Western Europe from fascism. Prof. Sir Tom Devine has enthusiastically endorsed ‘Empire First’ as “well researched, clear, fluent - a convincing indictment of the Churchill myth. A book with immense appeal.” We’re often told that Britain was at its ‘greatest’ during WWII – Dr. Bowman debunks that delusion.
