Dr Amy Beddows: Media, gender, and violence
Details
Dr Amy Beddows: Media, gender, and violence.
While films and TV, video games and social media are often blamed for causing real-life violence, the realities are much more complicated. This session will consider whether entertainment media does contribute to gender-based violence, such as sexual assault or domestic abuse, or if these products can actively challenge harmful messaging and provide meaning and healing for survivors.
Dr Amy Beddows is a trauma therapist, writer, and researcher on gender-based violence. She has a PhD in women’s experiences of victim blame and is especially interested in the therapeutic potential of media, especially the horror and true crime genres. Amy lives in Edinburgh and enjoys hiking up the hills with her sweet pup, Darcy.
This event is free to attend, although we will be asking for donations at the end of the talk. Participants are under no obligation whatsoever to donate, however please rest assured that the money we collect doesn't end up in anyone's pocket - it is used to fund our overhead costs, and travel/accommodation for our speakers who come from further afield. Please note there are some steps in the venue so if you have motor difficulties, please let us know and we may be able to make other arrangements.
