Details

Want to learn about or work on projects that make walking or biking more accessible and safer? Here are two sessions on a few initiatives available so far and how you can help!

Part 1: 7:00 PM

Karen Parker is the City of Edmonton's Manager of Data Analytics. She oversees the City of Edmonton Open Data program as well as a team of data engineers and analytics experts who focus on solving city problems using data. Karen has been instrumental in advocating for better use of data both within the City of Edmonton organization and for its citizens. She will give an overview of the city's recent adoption of the Canadian Open Government License, a tour of the Open Data Portal, and will pitch an idea for using open source tools to create useful bike maps for Edmonton riders.

Part 2: 7:25 PM

Starting mid-September, Edmontonian Eugene Chen e-scooted and walked 520.6km of roads and bike paths primarily across 2 wards in Edmonton while taking photos with a Google Street View (GSV) ready camera. The GSV photos of these paths have since been viewed over 1M times on Google. He will share a story about the journey from an initial idea, to the community-based budgeting project that helped obtain the camera, and to the many (and sometimes painful) learnings along the way. He will also touch on some possible next steps, answer any questions, and collect any feedback on what else can be done from attendees. He's also hoping for some specific help on expanding the project further.

Part 3: 8:15pm

We will be re-launching our open list for communicating community project needs so that tech volunteers, including ones from BetaCity, will be able to look at projects of interest to them and join. In this quick session we will give a quick overview of what to expect, and where to find the list.
