A better world through job creation?
Details
Effective altruism tends to focus on serving society through donations and careers, but politicians say that voters often care more about job creation than about public services. Is creating jobs an effective way to serve society that effective altruism has been overlooking? We all create jobs through the services we buy, but how might a well-intentioned individual who doesn't work in management go about creating more jobs?
Join us for a conversation on the role of job creation in making a lasting difference in the world. How should we think about employment as an impact strategy? When are jobs more effective than other approaches like direct cash transfers, health interventions, or education? We’ll explore the evidence, tradeoffs, and unanswered questions around creating opportunities that improve people’s lives. This will be a discussion-based event, moderated by an economist, with perspectives from across the effective altruism community.
