SMU Meadows Wind Ensemble: “Clazzical!”

“CLAZZICAL!” is a program of music that, like the title, represents a fusion of “classical” and jazz styles,
written by composers who negotiated both genres equally well. The program will feature Igor Stravinsky’s Ebony Concerto written for Woody Herman and his big-band The Thundering Herd, with Meadows faculty member and Dallas Symphony clarinetist Stephen Ahearn as soloist.

The program will also include Warren Benson’s New Orleans jazz funeral piece Dawn’ s Early Light and Dmitri Shostakovich’s seldom-performed Jazz Suite No. 2. The concert will conclude with Blue Dawn into White Heat , by legendary Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and conductor Gunther Schuller.”
