In 1974, Wikipedia informs me, Saadawi was interviewing inmates in Egypt's Qanatir prison for a study of neurosis in Egyptian women. One of these inmates, Firdaus, was sentenced to death for the murder of a man. Her story became the basis for Saadawi's novel - Firdaus herself was later hanged. So it's probably not going to be a barrel of laughs. But it does sound very interesting. Feminist masterpiece or negative western stereotypes? Let's see!
