Though personally I can never get quite enough of dark, dystopian reading material, we set ourselves the goal of finding something more uplifting this time round. This novel, narrated in the form of letters from an elderly man to a son he may never know, tells the story of a pastor living in small town Iowa and, in the process, of America itself in the period from the civil war and through the last century.
Ok, so I admit, it's not immediately obvious in what way that will be uplifting - though a Guardian critic did say "there’s a sense of bright, piercing joy, found in sharp and beautiful passages". That might just be the sort of thing Guardian critics say, of course.
Anyway, let's see.
