For our very first book club meeting, we’re heading to 19th-century Brazil with The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas by Machado de Assis!
First published in 1881, this novel turns the idea of a memoir upside down. Its narrator, Brás Cubas, begins his story after his death, freed from reputation, consequence, and social expectation. From beyond the grave, he recounts his life with wit, irony, and sharp self-awareness.
